Hollywood interviews from the copy factory?

He allegedly interviewed more than 100 top Hollywood stars over the last years. Some of them twice, some three, some even eight times. Their names are huge: Dustin Hoffman, Cate Blanchett, George Clooney, Helen Mirren, Brad Pitt. Next to many others they are said to have confided to the German reporter, talking to him about affairs, alcohol and crises. But is it true? Did these interviews take place exactly like that, as it is being claimed?

According to an investigation by Übermedien there are doubts about this: In some of the interviews we have reviewed, sentences and passages from interviews in other media outlets can be found, sometimes almost word by word.

Cutout: „Das neue Blatt“ / Montage: Ü

For example: In an interview with actor Dustin Hoffman, published in the magazine „Das neue Blatt“ in 2015, quotations can be found that also have been published in the „New York Times“, „Bon Appétit“ and „Independent“. The situation seems to be the same in other interviews: Now Uebermedien discovered more than 30 duplicates as shown in the following table.

Joan Collins

„Mirror“, 2015 Brettschneider, 2018
„I eat a lot of avocado, raw spinach, broccoli. My exercise regime for the past two months has been swimming at my home in the South of France. I try to do 30 laps a day, and 15 minutes of floor work three times a week.“ „Ich esse viel Avocado, rohen Spinat und Brokkoli.
„Ageing is inevitable but you can fight it all the way. I don’t want to fight it with Botox, fillers or facelifts, they make people look silly, I fight it by taking scrupulous care of my skin.“ „Wissen Sie, alt werden ist etwas Unvermeidliches.
I never put my face in the sun. I see all the time how staggeringly bad that is. I love being in the sun though. I’ve decided I don’t care about it on my body but I do on my face. So I’m tanned everywhere except my face which is white as a sheet. I put on several coats of my First Base foundation to match my body. Then I wear SPF, moisturiser, sunglasses and a hat.
I don’t go designer shopping, it’s a waste of money. Couture clothes are a complete, well, I won’t say disgrace, but to spend £20,000 on a dress is obscene. I know what I like and I have a lot of things made because they don’t exist in the shops. I have a fabulous dressmaker.

Susan Sarandon

„Vogue“, 2016 Brettschneider, 2017
I never have been very up on the latest trends in fashion or beauty. I am of the generation that was baking bread and living in the country, so I was aware of what I was putting into my body but not necessarily getting waxed and getting my hair done every week or anything like that.“ „Ich war nie interessiert, auf dem neuesten Stand in Sachen Mode und Schönheit zu sein.

„But [my daughter] has already given me instructions on how to be a good grandmother. First of all, listen. Then you won’t be boring. And spoil your grandchildren. Do everything the parents don’t want you to do.“ Meine Tochter hat mir vorher Instruktionen gegeben, wie ich als Großmutter sein sollte.
„Telegraph“, 2010 Brettschneider, 2014
„It stands for ‚A New Dawn A New Day‘. It’s supposed to remind me that if there are disappointments or mistakes, the next day I can just start again.“ „‚A New Dawn A New Day‘.

Pierce Brosnan

„GQ“, 2014 Brettschneider, 2018
„I met Tom Brosnan. He came to visit me when I was Remington Steele. (…) We sat and had a cup of tea. It was on a Sunday. Talked about this and that, and downstairs, I met a few first cousins who I didn’t know, had pints of Guinness and he got on the minibus and drove away and…
„Origin Magazine“, 2013 Brettschneider, 2014
„I play tennis in the morning after dropping the boys at school. Then I go to the gym and I come home. Make a cup of coffee, go up to my studio, and paint for a while. Read scripts, answer phone calls, have lunch with Keely. Then I go back to the studio and paint for a while. Pick the boys up from school. That’s about it, really. It’s very simple. I live a very simple existence when I’m not on the road.“ „Ich spiele morgens etwas Tennis, wenn ich die beiden Jungs zur Schule gebracht habe.

Helen Mirren

„AARP The Magazine“, 2016 Brettschneider, 2017
„We got married in the end because we realized that we were going to be together forever. We got married, ultimately, for legal reasons more than anything else. Estate planning and other complicated things like that. And our families, we sensed, wanted us to be married. I always said I have nothing against marriage, it just wasn’t to my taste, like turnips. It took me a very long time to come round to acquiring the taste. I just had to meet the right turnip.“ Wir heirateten am Ende, weil wir erkannten, dass wir für immer zusammenbleiben würden.
„(…) you only have two options in life: Die young or get old. There is nothing else. The idea of dying young when you’re 25 is kind of cool — a bit romantic, like James Dean. But then you realize that life is too much fun to do that.

Sharon Stone

„AARP The Magazine“, 2012 Brettschneider, 2017
„I would go to these [philanthropic] events where I had to get on stage. I would be in the wings, with people looking at me, my head on the floor, praying: ‚God, please help me. I know I have to go out there and raise money. But I’ve lost my child, I’ve lost my health, I’ve lost everything.‘ I was just broken.“ „Ich nahm an Wohltätigkeitsveranstaltungen teil und während ich auf meine Auftritte wartete, betete ich: ‚Gott, bitte lass mich nicht im Stich.

Julianne Moore

„Parade Magazine“, 2015 Brettschneider, 2017
„Right before I met my husband, I always felt as if the party was happening somewhere else. (…) And once I met him and we had our children, I was like, ‘This is where the party is.’

Isabella Rossellini

„Guardian“, 2016 Brettschneider, 2017
“My mum told me that there is no job for women between 45 and 60, because you are in-between. You are not young enough to play the young girl, but you are also not old enough to play the matriarch, the witch or grandmother. So there is a period of 15 years where you’re in limbo and they don’t know how to hire you.
„Telegraph“, 2014 Brettschneider, 2017
„When my jobs started to become less, and my children were grown up, I felt like an empty-nester,” she explains. “So, like a good American, I went to therapy and asked, ‘What do I do with my life?’ I said I would like to do something about animals, and my therapist said, ‘Why not?’“ „Als meine Jobs anfingen spärlich zu werden und meine Kinder erwachsen und aus dem Haus waren, hatte ich das Gefühl, auf einem leeren Nest zu sitzen.

Cate Blanchett

„GQ“, 2015 Brettschneider, 2016
Have you ever attempted to do something else entirely?

„Yeah, but I don’t know what it is. What should I do? You got any suggestion? I can’t write. I can’t knit. I’m not crafty. I can cook. I can’t retire. What would you do, develop a hobby like golf? I tried golf; I’m really bad at it. I’m a full-time mother and I’m doing that.“

„Daily Mail“, September 2016 Brettschneider, November 2016
„She says that during that time, she re-charged her creative batteries by allowing herself to do all the things she hadn’t had time for while establishing her career. ‘I wanted to keep some promises to myself I had made a very long time ago.'“ „Ich hatte das Bedürfnis, meine kreativen Batterien aufzuladen, mich Dingen zuzuwenden, für die ich nie Zeit hatte, weil ich zu sehr mit meiner Karriere befasst war.

Kate Winslet

„Telegraph“, 2013 Brettschneider, 2016
„Marriage is about the meeting of two minds and two souls and hoping that it is going to work forever. But sometimes it doesn’t happen, and that’s a shame.“ „Ehe ist das Zusammentreffen des Verstandes zweier Menschen und ihrer Seele in der Hoffnung, dass es für immer gut geht. Manchmal geht das nicht, das ist schade.“

Angelina Jolie

„Hello!“, 2008 Brettschneider, 2009
„(…) there was a big discussion in our house of, ‘Should I go back to work?’ Brad was wonderfully supportive. He said, ‘Your work is part of you and you should do this. We’ll be fine – the babies will be sitting up and hanging out in your trailer, and the kids will come to visit when they’re not at school’.“ „(…) es gab bei uns zu Hause eine große Diskussion darüber, ob ich wieder in den Job zurückkehren sollte.
„60 Minutes“, 2011 Brettschneider, 2014
„I went through heavy darker times and I survived them. I didn’t die young, so I’m very lucky.“ „Ich hatte sehr dunkle, harte Zeiten. Doch ich habe überlebt. Ich bin nicht früh gestorben. Aber nur, weil ich großes Glück hatte.“

George Clooney

„News.com.au“, Mai 2015 Brettschneider, August 2015
„And since [Amal] is smarter than me, the only way we resolve anything is by arm wrestling. That is my only chance of winning anything with her because if it’s an intellectual battle, I would lose.“ „Und Amal ist unglaublich intelligent.
„The town has the greatest pub in the world which is something like 200 years old. Amal and I walk from our house over a bridge, through a graveyard and into the pub. It’s fine going there but coming back is a little, eh,“ he jokes.
„Our only adjustments are figuring out our schedules. Our deal is that we can’t be more than a week apart. So far that’s worked out pretty well.“ „Die einzige wirkliche Umstellung ist, darum zu kämpfen, unsere Terminkalender in Einklang zu bringen. (…)

Goldie Hawn

Buch von Goldie Hawn, 2011 Brettschneider, 2015
„I went to my knitting basket and found some old threads of red, white, and blue. Knitting has always been a form of meditation for me, and so I began to knit the American flag.“ „Dann griff ich zum Korb mit meinem Strickzeug.
„If I could help just one little girl or boy move beyond those images that will haunt us all, that would be a gift.“ „Ich sagte mir: Wenn du nur ein paar kleine Mädchen und Jungen diese schrecklichen Bilder vergessen lässt, ist das ein Geschenk.“

Salma Hayek

„Guardian“, März 2015 Brettschneider, November 2015
„I am a feminist because I love women and I am ready to fight for women. I am a feminist because I am proud to be a woman, and I am passionate about making the world a better place for women.“ „Ich bin Feministin, weil ich stolz bin, eine Frau zu sein.
„The amount of pressure on women now, it’s crazy. You have to be much better than your male colleagues, just so you can maybe try and get the same salary as them. And you still have to be a good wife and mother. And now you also have to be skinny, and you have to look 20 when you’re 40. It’s too much.“ „Der Druck, dem Frauen heutzutage ausgesetzt sind, ist reiner Wahnsinn.

Kevin Costner

„Good Housekeeping“, 2007 Brettschneider, 2015
„But I feel really good about the kind of dad I was the first time around. I was there for all the little moments, like when my kids forgot to sing in their school play because they were too busy waving at me.
„Telegraph“, 2011 Brettschneider, 2015
„I’ve been very lucky with the movies, but I think essentially I’m a blue-collar kind of guy.“ „Ich hatte großes Glück im Filmgeschäft, aber im Grunde bin ich ein Bursche im Blaumann geblieben und im Arbeitermilieu verwurzelt.“

Jennifer Aniston

„New York Times“, Januar 2015 Brettschneider, März 2015
„I’ve been on too-thin lists. I’ve been on what-happened-to-her lists.“ „Ich war auf den Listen der zu Dünnen, und ich stand auf den Listen der ‚Was ist denn bloß los mit ihr?‘-Frauen.“

Brad Pitt

„Hello! Magazine“, 2014 Brettschneider, 2015
„We have six kids and our kids were asking [about a wedding], so we thought it would be a lovely thing to do with our family, and it was.“ „Unsere Kinder fragten uns immer wieder [nach einer Hochzeit].
„But I was surprised afterwards that it is more than just a ceremony. I was surprised by the furthering of the depth of commitment.“ „Ich würde heute nicht mehr sagen, dass Ehe nur ein Titel ist, ein Stück abgesegnetes Papier oder eine Zeremonie. Sie ist mehr als das. (…)

Barbra Streisand

She describes what she does wear in one word: „Black.“ „I like simple things. Elastic waists,“ she adds, laughing, „so I can eat.“ „Ich trage immer Schwarz und am liebsten mit Gummiband um die Taille, damit ich gut essen kann.“

Nicole Kidman

„Harper’s Bazaar“, 2011 Brettschneider, 2012 & 2014
„[When we first met] I remember thinking, Oh, my God, if you ever gave me a man like that, I promise I would be completely devoted for the rest of my life.“ „Bei unserer ersten Begegnung dachte ich: Oh Gott, wenn du mir jemals einen wie diesen gibst, verspreche ich, hingebungsvoll für den Rest meines Lebens zu sein.“

Julia Roberts

„Mirror“, Januar 2014 Brettschneider, Mai 2014
„I wake up at 5.15am every day just to get things sorted out… breakfast for the kids and getting them off to school. Four days a week I volunteer at their school, then I get home and start getting dinner ready.“ „Ich stehe um Viertel nach fünf auf, um die Dinge für den Tag zu planen.

Kathleen Turner

„The Inquirer“, 2012 Brettschneider, 2014
„I love acting—it’s what I was born to do. The idea of not being able to move well enough to be a good actor was terrifying to me. At one point, they told me I would be in a wheelchair for the rest of my life—at which point, I fired that doctor immediately. It took a lot of hard work.“ „Ich liebe die Schauspielerei.
„My husband helped me hide it a lot. We had these elaborate tricks like, for example, if we had to go out for dinner with people I had business with, if I needed to get up from the table, my husband would be this extraordinary gentleman. He’d say, “Darling, wait.” He’d come around and, while they couldn’t see, he would get his hands under my arms so he could lift me. Because I couldn’t stand up on my own.“ „Mein Mann half mir sehr, meinen Zustand zu verbergen.

Most of these Brettschneider-quotes are published in „Das neue Blatt“, some in „Kölner Stadtanzeiger“, „Mainpost“ and „Stuttgarter Nachrichten“. Other parts of the interviews can also be found in biographies or other websites on the Internet. With the help of Google they are quite easy to find. And possibly there are quite more duplicates.

The interviews have been published in German daily newspapers and most of them in magazines that belong to the Hamburg-based Bauer Verlag, who often sold them as „exclusive“. Mysterious as well: Often interviewers can be seen on photos next to their interviews, together with the stars, close at hand. But for this reporter there are no star photos during interviews at all. Why?

The name of the reporter is Edmund Brettschneider, he is 82 years old. His interview career began many years ago as a Hollywood reporter within the Bauer-Verlag, working amongst others for the German TV magazine „TV Movie“. Since then, Brettschneider, who is supposed to be a member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, has been reporting about US stars and films. His interviews can be found in the „Berliner Kurier“ and the „Hamburger Morgenpost“ as well as in magazines like „Greta“ and „Das neue Blatt“.

Brettschneider often talks about current projects with the stars. He describes the property or the hotel room in which he meets them. He describes the body language of his interview partners. And Brettschneider seems to know no limits: He addresses suicide attempts, marital crises, alcohol problems. „Do you have a new lover?“ „What about sex?“ „You’ve really never had a cosmetic surgery?“ No matter how intimate the question is, Brettschneider asks it – and never does a manager intervene.

In recent years, there have been various cases of made up or copied interviews. The author of these interviews was not Edmund Brettschneider, but a pattern is noticeable: In 2016, for example, an interview with George Clooney appeared in the magazine „Hello!“. The magazine found out later it has been composed of earlier interviews and inventions.

Similarly, an interview with Michael Douglas printed in 2010 in various DuMont-published newspapers. Some quotes were true, but old, most of them were „completely imaginary“. An interview with the German actors Jan Josef Liefers and Axel Prahl from 2018 was also only copied and put together, as it turned out. It appeared in the Bauer magazine „TV Movie“.

So, how „exclusive“ are Edmund Brettschneider’s interviews in fact? How much was simply copied, and how many conversations actually took place? Following our questions, the Bauer-Verlag replies in a „close exchange“ with the reporter, he would have had „confirmed that everything is fine with the interviews“. „We have no reason to doubt the accuracy of his statement,“ says a spokeswoman. The fact that celebrities repeat what they say or are being quoted by other media is „not only common practice,“ she says, „it also manifests their correctness“. The publisher didn’t explain why there are no photos with Brettschneider.

Neither the Bauer-Verlag nor other media companies contacted by Uebermedien provided evidence that Brettschneider’s „exclusive“ interviews really took place. Reactions from interviewed stars as to whether they were interviewed by Edmund Brettschneider or not are still pending.

Last year, the Bauer-Verlag had to pay a monetary compensation of 50,000 Euros to the actress Sandra Bullock. She had sued the company because Bauer’s magazine „Freizeitwoche“ had printed five alleged conversations with her – none of which had ever taken place. Back then other film stars such as Roger Moore or Catherine Deneuve had also confirmed to Uebermedien that they had not been involved in interviews with „Freizeitwoche“. Bullock, however, was the only one to take legal action against it.
